3 Essentials for a Successful Internet Business

All of us are feeling the pinch of a tightening economy. Wages that were adequate last year are no longer adequate. Baby-boomers in particular fear they do not have enough money put aside as retirement looms. However the need for more income is being felt by all age groups.

Given this reality, it’s no surprise that many people are considering a Internet business as a way to augment their income. Some people make truckloads of money with a Internet business – in multi-level, network, affiliate and direct sales marketing – however, these non-traditional businesses are not right for everyone.

I’ve identified three essential areas which should be honestly and carefully considered by anyone who thinks a Internet business might ease their financial pain. In fact, knowing one’s strengths and weaknesses in these essential areas is critical to any entrepreneur wanting to open any small business.

The three essentials are Mindset, Character, and Knowledge & Skills.

Essential #1: Mindset

How important is mindset to success? Very important, according to success coaches and authors like Tony Robbins, Napoleon Hill, Jack Canfield, Joe Vitale, Earl Nightingale, Dani Johnson … and the list goes on and on.

The way I see it, it’s hard enough creating a successful business just struggling with external influences like competition, technology, tax laws, and the like. When you also have to contend with psychological conflicts, and especially when those conflicts are waged on the subconscious level, creating a successful enterprise can be next to impossible.

Beliefs you have will either help pave your way, or cause seemingly impassible obstacles. Anyone considering going into a Internet business should look inward first to take stock of what Tony Robbins calls empowering and disempowering beliefs. I can highly recommend his book “Awakening the Giant Within”. It will help you gain insights into your disempowering self-beliefs. There are also many other coaches and authors whose books and tapes can be extremely helpful.

Essential #2: Character

Starting, building and maintaining a Internet business is not easy. Success requires strength of character which will sustain you through the hard times. The following character traits are essential:

  • Self Discipline – Without self discipline your business will not attain its potential. Consider an athlete with exceptional physical attributes and aptitude. Without the drive to compel hours of practice, day in and day out, that athlete will never be a champion.
  • Honesty – Without honesty, people around you will fall away. Dishonesty has a way of emerging to the light like weeds in spring.
  • Guts – Without guts there will be no risk, and without risk there will be no opportunity to find the nuggets that eventually lead to the mother lode.
  • Determination – Without determination, the will to hang in and continue putting one foot in front of the other will die.
  • Generosity – Without generosity people will begin to resent you and your business. Remember how much pain Mr. Scrooge had to endure before realizing how much fun generosity can be!
  • Thick Skin – Rejection can overwhelm your spirit and shut you down. Business is a numbers game, and for every person who buys there will be many others who don’t.
  • Quest for Growth – Without learning, how will you grow? The most successful people find coaches, mentors and masters from whom they learn by enhancing knowledge and skills.

Essential #3: Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge doesn’t have to come from formal education, but it has to come from somewhere!

Another great book is Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki and Sharon Lechter. In it the authors explore the difference between formal education, and the lessons needed to be financially successful. To be successful with any Internet business you don’t necessarily need a formal education, but you do need to know what you’re doing. If you don’t, you will probably lose money.

No one masters any profession without knowledge and skills. That’s just common sense. Yet it seems  many people look to magically get rich quickly working online. Life simply doesn’t work that way. There are many options available to those who want to learn how to Internet successfully. I can highly recommend Maverick Money Makers, which has outstanding videos explaining pretty much everything you need to know to reach your financial goals working online from home.

In Conclusion

While starting a Internet business can be exciting and lucrative, it can also be difficult and demanding. It is not something that should be done on a whim. I guess the best advice I can give you is to learn as much as you can about marketing, both online and offline methods, because the lifeblood of any business is the flow of customers you can generate to it. Without potential customers flowing through your door, or your web portal, you have zero chance of making your business a success.
